Drum Lessons

Florida Enrichment Academy offers Drum lessons from experienced instructors with proven skills. Lesson plans are individually tailored to meet the unique needs of each student. Motivation is enhanced by concentrating on styles of music of interest to the student including rock, country, blues, shred, metal, classical and jazz. Lessons are taught in a safe studio environment that minimizes distraction and facilitates learning. There are no ringing phones, overly friendly cats, barking dogs or “someone is at the door” interruptions you may find when teaching takes place in a home.

The typical lesson is forty-five minutes long and combines a fifteen-minute computer based music theory session with a thirty-minute session on the drum. The theory session focuses on note reading, pitch and interval recognition, chords and rhythms allowing the drum instructor to concentrate on teaching the student to play the instrument using proper techniques. The result is a shorter learning curve and a reduction in the time it takes to become competent and enjoy playing.

Florida Enrichment Academy believes that every person has the ability to play drums for their own enjoyment and the enjoyment of others. Our drum teachers take students far beyond learning a few patterns and limited reading of drum lines associated with a particular style of music. Students will learn proper playing technique, hand control, and all of the fundamental rudiments as well as note reading, pitch recognition, rhythm, and other skills included in a complete music education. Our goal is to open the student’s mind to the relationship of drums with the other instruments in the band or orchestra as well as the fantastic possibilities of the instrument itself. Lesson plans are individually developed to meet the goals of the drummer aspiring to play in a rock, jazz or marching band or the more serious drum student desiring to learn percussion well enough to be accepted in a university music department.

Studies show that drum lessons which enable the drummer to fully participate in music performance increase creative intelligence and contribute to success in school and success in life.

  • One researcher states, “the musician is constantly adjusting decisions on tempo, tone, style, rhythm, phrasing and feeling – training the brain to become incredibly good at organizing and conducting numerous activities at once. Dedicated practice of the orchestration can have a great payoff for lifelong attention skills, intelligence and ability for self-knowledge and expression.

  • A second researcher determined that students taking music lessons receive more academic honors and awards and made better grades in high school. The also scored higher on SAT college entrance tests.

  • Another researcher found that 66% of music majors who applied to medical schools were accepted. Only 44% of biochemistry majors were accepted.

  • Still another researcher found that 84% of individuals making over $150,000 a year play a guitar or another musical instrument regularly.

Acquiring Drums

Students generally start lessons with a practice pad and a stand. After several months of practice when the student is comfortable with the fundamentals a student desiring to participate in a band, other than a marching band, will need a drum set. A basic drum set consists of a snare drum, base drum, mounted tom, floor tom, hi-hat and ride cymbal. These pieces can be purchased a few at a time and it is possible to find used equipment for at least part of the set locally.
